## Introduction

The Footpath Officer is responsible for ensuring that the public rights of way in the Chelmsford area are kept clear, safe and legally protected. This involves:

* **Monitoring the condition of footpaths:** Regularly walking sections of the network to identify any problems such as overgrown vegetation, stiles in disrepair, blocked waymarkers or illegal obstructions.
* **Reporting issues to the relevant authorities:** Liaising with Essex County Council Highways Department, who are responsible for maintaining public rights of way, to ensure that reported problems are investigated and rectified.
* **Responding to public enquiries:** Answering questions from ramblers and other members of the public regarding the footpath network.
* **Contributing to local planning consultations:** Making sure that the interests of walkers are represented when new developments are proposed that might affect the rights of way.
* **Keeping abreast of changes in legislation:** Understanding the legal framework surrounding public rights of way and ensuring that the group's activities are compliant.

## How You Can Help

If you discover any issues on a public footpath in the Chelmsford area, please report them to the Footpath Officer. This could be anything from a broken stile to an illegal obstruction. Please provide as much detail as possible, including the location of the problem (grid reference if possible), the nature of the issue and ideally a photograph.

You can contact the Footpath Officer by:

*   **Email:** [andrew.lewis@example.com]
*   **Telephone:** [01245 123456]
